Afghan police kill 4 militants in South

KABUL, June 24 -- Four anti-government militants were killed and three others sustained injuries Wednesday as they came in contact with Afghan National Police (ANP) in Taliban's former stronghold Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan, a statement of Interior Ministry issued here said.

"It occurred at around 10:45 a.m. local time (GMT0615) as police encountered a group of armed men who were busy in planting mines on a public road in Hos-e-Madad area of Jalai district, resultantly four militants were killed and three more got wounded," the statement added.

It said that there were no casualties on ANP while a remote control bomb and a dead body of enemy were found on the ground.

In a separate incident, it further said, one suspected man was arrested as he was carrying some ammunition on his motorbike in Wardak province, some 60 km west of capital Kabul.

The suspected man was arrested in Syed Abad district while two boxes of AK -47 bullets, over 200 heavy machine gun bullets and eight rockets of RPG -7 were found on his possession, it said.

The south Afghanistan has seen escalation of Taliban -led militancy and violence during the past week as over two dozens of police and some 80 militants were killed in the post-Taliban central Asian state.
